Premature Ejaculation
A common problem that strikes most men at some point
Premature ejaculation is the most common ejaculation problem. It is where the male ejaculates too quickly during sexual intercourse. Although it is up to the individual and their partner to decide whether or not they are happy with the time it takes for him to ejaculate; studies have shown that the average time between a man penetrating into his partner and ejaculating is around five to six minutes.
Often I get couples come into the pharmacy discussing this. Common confusion is the difference between erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. Erectiledysfunction (impotence) is the inability to get and maintain an erection that is sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. Premature ejaculation is classed as regular ejaculation before or within a minute of penetrating your partner. It is then regarded as a medical problem that requires treatment.
However, sometimes simple changes could make a difference. Anxiety of one incident could cascade to further anxiety leading to premature ejaculation. It is important to realise that this does happen to most men at some time in their life. It is found that 1 in 3 men have reported to be affected by premature ejaculation. Try to not let the anxiety kick in and just enjoy the moment without the fear.
If there are other issues such as stress, high BMI, emotional issues and anxiety; dearPHARMACIST will help you ascertain the issues and direct you towards good health.
Some medical conditions could be the underlining cause of premature ejaculation. Examples are diabetes, high blood pressure, underactive thyroid gland, multiple sclerosis and prostate disease. I have found that use of recreational drugs and high intake of alcohol to be the most common reasons. It is best to book an appointment with dearPHARMACIST to discuss this.
Medication is available to help treat premature ejaculation. What is also advised is couples therapy; techniques are taught for partners to practice to help delay ejaculation. There are over the counter products that can help delaying ejaculation. The products use an anaesthetic that reduces the sensitivity of the penis. They are quick acting, making them convenient. The products come in spray form and there are also condoms that have an anaesthetic as part of the lubricant. Men prefer the condom as it’s more discreet about the issue then having to spray their penis before sexual activity.
It is important to first discuss this with your partner to establish whether it is a problem or not. It is then advised to visit dearPHARMACIST to discuss methods and techniques to help to delay ejaculation. Furthermore, dearPHARMACIST, will help liaise with your GP if medical attention is recommended.
